How to stop eating junk food out of habit
Most junk food isn't eaten because you're hungry. It's eaten because you're bored, tired, because it's sitting on the table, or because that's what you do in front of a show.
That isn't a lack of discipline. It's a habit, and a habit can be changed in small steps.
1. Notice when it happens
In front of a screen, after school or work, late at night, when you're stressed. For one day, just notice when it happens, without changing anything.
2. Decide in advance what you do instead
"When I feel like junk for no reason, I ___". For example:
- drink a glass of water first
- eat a piece of fruit
- go for a 5-minute walk
And if you still want it after that, that's allowed. The goal is for it not to happen on autopilot.
3. If it's not at home, it doesn't get eaten
It's hard to resist a snack sitting in the drawer. Simply don't buy it for home, or keep it somewhere hard to reach.
4. Don't get too hungry
When you skip a meal, hunger wins in the evening. Regular meals during the day reduce cravings at night.
5. Water first
Thirst often feels like hunger. A glass of water before opening the fridge gives you a moment to think.
6. Don't eat from the bag in front of a screen
When you eat straight from the bag in front of a show, you don't notice how much. Put it in a small bowl, and that's it.
7. Count days, not perfection
There will be junk days, like a birthday or going out with friends, and that's fine. No need to punish yourself, just come back the next day.
